Developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is everyone’s worst nightmare. In general, a disease will negatively impact either a physical or a mental function, ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE seizes both. The disease is named for Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor who, during an autopsy in 1906, discovered physical changes in the brain of a woman who had died of a strange mental illness. He found plaques and tangles in her brain, signs that are now considered hallmarks of AD.
Alzheimer’s are also termed as dementia . Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. It is a primary degenerative brain disease of unknown aetiology that is insidious in onset , followed by gradual deterioration of mental functions, which include memory, orientation ,judgement and other intellectual functions and results in death in about 10 years.
There are 3 stages of Alzheimer’s are described:-
Early stage – Mild dependence for activities of daily living. Early onset Alzheimer’s disease often occurs at the age of 60. It is less common and tends to progress rapidly in patients.
Moderate stage- Patients become more and more dependent for activities of daily living and self care.
Severe stage- Completely dependent for activities of daily living. Late onset Alzheimer’s is common in persons aged 60 and above.
It is a neurological disease of the brain . It can lead to loss of neurons and intellectual abilities. As u grow old , there are high chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease involve both environmental and genetic factors. It’s estimated that more than five million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, although not all are diagnosed.
The cause for most Alzheimer’s cases is still mostly unknown. Aluminium is partially blamed for this condition. In Alzheimer’s disease, the brain cells degenerate and die, causing a steady decline in memory and mental function. Alzheimer’s leads to significant brain shrinkage. On examination found two abnormalities which can cause Alzheimer’s :-
Plaques formation- These clumps of a protein called beta-amyloid may damage and destroy brain cells.
Tangles – The tangles are within the brain neurons – from a disintegration of another protein, called tau.
Other cause are- Schizophrenia
Atrophy of brain .
Deficiency disease like Vitamin B12 , pernicious anaemia etc.
Space occupying lesion in the brain.
Serious head injuries in early adult life are associated with this disease.
Increasing forgetfulness or mild confusion.
Memory loss especially recent events.
Difficulty in organising your thoughts.
Repeat statements and questions over and over, not realizing that they’ve asked the question before.
Eventually forget the names of family members and everyday objects.
Get lost in familiar places.
Deterioration of social skills and mood changes are present.
Confusion , disorientation, emotional unstability .
a) Restlessness and anxiousness
b) Bladder and bowel movements
d) Malnutrition and dehydration.
Alzheimer’s can be medically managed in a way that optimizes the quality of life for both patients and their families. Alzheimer’s patients need careful and supportive environment , family counselling to deal with them.
Alzheimer’s patients can be advised to do –
Walk regularly as walking increases brain activity.
Maintain good and familiar environment.
Eat nutritious food.
Make it a habit to note down appointments or things to do.
Take someone along always while going out.
Patient should carry an identity card with their phone number .
Avoid alcohol and smoking.
Treat these patients with patience and dignity.
HOME REMEDIES –
The home remedies found below will help you avoid some of the suspected causes of Alzheimer’s disease.
PUMPKIN SEEDS – They are packed with essential fatty acids, necessary for brain function.
SESAME OIL – Depression associated with Alzheimer’s disease may be relieved with nose drops of warmed sesame oil – use about 3 drops per nostril , twice a day OR rubbing a warmed sesame oil on the top of the head and bottoms of the feet.
BLUEBERRIES – It contain anti oxidant that may slow down age related motor changes , such as those seen in Alzheimer’s Disease.
CITRUS FRUITS – Citrus fruits are loaded with Vitamin C an anti oxidant , that help to protect brain nerves.
FISH – Fatty acids are important for healthy brain function, and fish is high in fatty acids (that’s why it’s often called “brain food”). Good choices include salmon , lake trout. Be aware, however, that some fish especially shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tile fish contain high levels of mercury and should be avoided.
LEMON OIL –. Few drops of lemon or peppermint oil in hot water, then inhale. These aromatherapy stimulants can perk up those suffering typical Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms, such as lethargy or depression.
The best management that we can give homoeopathically is to take the complete history of the patient and provide best treatment by counselling the patients physically and mentally . In homoeopathy treatment is given to the patient as a whole , homoeopathic medicines are safe n cures completely and permanently with adequate diet and lifestyle changes and counselling gives great results.
